About the Mutuals
The Ontario Mutuals are a network of 40 independent, purely mutual insurance companies across Ontario who make up one of the strongest financial networks in the world.
They began as “the farm mutuals” — small groups of farmers who banded together to protect one another from the financial ruin that would result from a barn fire. At that time — more than 160 years ago — no one else would offer these settlers insurance coverage, so they got together to protect one another, in true neighbour-helping-neighbour style.
Today, the Mutuals offer a full range of insurance products for farms, homes, auto and commercial coverage. But that spirit has never left; that’s why our theme is “we’re in this together.”
The Mutuals Difference
Each company is 100% independent, local and policyholder-owned and everyone is people-centered, not profit-centered. That’s because there are no investors who expect a profit. Instead, every policyholder is a member who has a say in important issues at that company.
Each company’s directors are also policyholders…elected by policyholders like you. So you know that then policyholders’ interests come first.
The Ontario Mutual Insurance Association or OMIA, is the trade association that serves these companies by providing leadership through education, training, and support services. OMIA has a rich history dating back more than 125 years.
